History of Brown
When you drive onto the Brown School campus, you see that we have historically shared our school grounds with Kennedy Middle School. Our students often integrate at the close of the school day on the playgrounds. This sisterhood is unique to our environment. On the weekends and after school, families enjoy our new playground facilities and many community-sporting events happen on the Kennedy and Brown School fields. While the same school spirit has lingered for many years, reconstruction of Brown School over the years has brought this neighborhood school from a small schoolhouse of six classrooms to an elementary building that houses 25 plus classrooms.
In 1950 Brown School was built on a beautiful woodsy, 22-acre site. The school was named and dedicated in honor of two West Natick men, Harold B. Brown and Herbert M. Brown, Jr., brothers who lost their lives in World War II. In the spring of 1989 the Brown School district was expanded due to the closing of several neighborhood schools. Within a year our community of students rose to approximately 260 students.
Finally, in the fall of 1994 celebration ribbons were cut to the new Brown neighborhood K-4 school, which presently houses 500 students and 85 staff members. Education has changed over the years, but the vision for our students has remained constant. Leadership from staff, our School Council, PTO, and administration has shepherded our students into the 21st Century. Our growth has been exciting and sets the pace for years to come.
