Improvement Goals

Improvement Goals

The School Council, whose membership is made up of the principal, staff, parents, and a community member, writes the Brown School Improvement Goals each year.  Members of the council, staff, and the principal bring suggested goals forward.
This year's three goals were chosen as they represent continued professional growth for staff, which in turn leads to best teaching practices for our students.

Our first goal is to develop a Curriculum Map for the reading and word work components of the Balanced Literacy Model. A curriculum map format organized by month will be developed for the purposes of creating grade level maps. The focus will be on the state standards and each staff member should gain insight into their own curriculum and explore any gaps, absences and repetitions that might exist. Once individual maps are prepared, the teachers will confer with grade level colleagues. The final step will be to meet across grade levels to ensure a smooth transition from grade to grade.  Alignment of content, skills, assessments, and resources to the ELA state standards will be the end goal for this coming school year.

As we enter into this school year, teachers will be reporting student progress on our new standards based Reports on Student Progress.  In an effort to have a shared understanding of this new reporting process, teachers will spend time reviewing and developing a common understanding of their grade level's Report on Student Progress.

In addition, assessments, rubrics, and exemplars will be reviewed and/or developed as a means of collecting data for reporting purposes. Grade level K-4 teams will also meet to share and integrate their collective understandings of the Reports on Student Progress. Our work will then be shared with parents at Open Houses, conferences, and during an evening parent forum.

Our final goal will be for staff to conduct "Learning Walks" in order to gain a deeper understanding of each other's teaching practices.
